What the Campus Gives Back

The plan changed. The people held.

Hannah Mantle came as a nursing student with a plan, a clear direction, four years mapped out, no room for uncertainty. What she found in the months that followed was something she hadn’t accounted for. 

She remembers sitting in an office, uncertain and a little undone, wondering what would come next. What steadied her was not a new direction. It was the realization that the people around her genuinely cared about the outcome, not for the institution’s sake, but for hers. That moment did not give her a new plan. It gave her a reason. She spent the next four years trying to be that for someone else: pouring into her peers, her CAB members and every student who crossed her path before she left.

Liz Keller has spent seven years at Ashland building the kind of environment where that happens. She came into student activities from residence life, guided by a mentor who told her she lit up when she talked about connecting students to experiences. In her role as Director of Student Activities, she has carried that same conviction forward into the student-led structure of CAB, into the weekly question she asks every student about self-care, into the culture she has built where students are known before they know themselves. The mentorship she received gets passed down through the people who carry it forward. Hannah is one of them.

Together, they reflect something that runs quietly through every corner of Ashland: a community where care is not a program and mentorship is not a department. It is the steady practice of people who notice, believe and call others forward. A campus that gives back in proportion to what you pour in.
